Start exploring the Snowy Mountains by bike and enjoy the beautiful view and scenery. From the highest peak of Australia and alpine lakes to forests, you can mountain bike or drive through the area’s tranquility. The following are some of the most famous mountain bike trails in the Snowy Mountains:
North Ridge Reserve, Cooma
North Ridge Reserve offers a variety of beginner, intermediate, and advanced trails. Most of these trails are made up of old service roads, walking trails, and motorcycle tracks, and they provide riders with varied and surprising terrain.
Beginner riders will appreciate the wide double tracks peppered with rougher and steeper sections where they can push their limits. The Lambie Bush Trail offers challenging terrain as well as incredible views of Cooma for more experienced riders. Visitors to Cooma will find plenty of parking and easy access to nearby shops and restaurants.
Lake Crackenback
Although the Lake Crackenback riding trails are part of the Novotel Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa, these trails are accessible to the public as long as the riders enroll at the Resort Activity Center. The resort maintains these trails all year, providing visitors with various mountain bike trails to challenge beginners and experts.
With its shared pathways, the Bullocks Hut Track is ideal for beginners. At the same time, intermediate trails like Thredbo River Loop and Muzzlewood offer fast-flowing single tracks, tight corners, rocky terrain, and man-made obstacles. You can also join a skills session or a guided ride and learn about bush tucker and wildlife.
Perisher
Perisher’s trails are spread across two mountains at the Perisher Ski Resort, taking riders to summits as high as 2,054 and 1,900 meters. Because the trails aren’t graded for mountain bikes, riders must navigate steep sections that run straight down the slope. Visitors brave enough to ride these trails are rewarded with breathtaking alpine scenery. For a more direct route can take Smiggins Link Road, located near Perisher Valley.
Bungarra Alpine Center
Bungarra Alpine Center is one of the best mountain biking destinations in the Snowy Mountains, with nearly 20 kilometers of professionally built trails. Five easy trails totaling more than seven kilometers are ideal for easing beginners into downhill speed. The Higwan Nature Trail is the longest and includes enjoyable leisurely memories where riders can enjoy the scenery. Riders will also discover a one-kilometer skill progression area with various structures for those looking to catch air off their jumps.
Thredbo
Thredbo is one of Australia’s most popular mountain bike resorts during the summer. Riders can access the trail via chairlift to Thredbo Village, approximately 1,350 meters above sea level, making the trail a famous one-way, downhill affair.
Many riders stick to the 17-kilometer-long Thredbo Valley Track, which has mostly easy sections with more challenging terrain, such as bridge crossings. Thredbo also has the high-octane Cannonball Downhill Trail and the Hollywood Jump Park for more experienced riders.
Khancoban
Riders will find more challenging trails in Khancoban. Downhill corners, steep climbing, and tight switchbacks are among the most challenging trails at Khancoban. These single tracks are well marked, but riders should be ready for sharp and rocky terrain. Some of the runs are linked by service trails, which provide riders with a well-deserved break before diving into more intense action.
Other Mountain Biking Trails
The Mount Kosciuszko Summit Trail provides breathtaking views of Australia’s highest peak. Mountain bikes are allowed between Charlotte Pass and Rawson Pass, where bike stands are available, and the 1.4-kilometer walk to the summit is possible.
Cascade Hut Trail winds through Pilot Wilderness Areas snow gum woodland. Beautiful wildflowers bloom in the area in the spring. If you continue to Barry Way, the 20km return trail can be extended to an overnight adventure.
You have missed out if you enjoy mountain biking and have not visited the Snowy Mountains!
